Zanaflex (generic name: Tizanidine; brand name: Sirdalud) is a muscle relaxant.
Zanaflex is a short-acting drug indicated for the management of spasticity. It is used for conditions which cause the muscles to spasm such as multiple sclerosis and spinal injury.
Zanaflex can reduce the increased muscle tone that is causing your spasticity without affecting your muscle strength.
Zanaflex works in the brain and spinal cord to change the messages being sent to the muscles and thereby reduce spasticity.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Zanaflex exactly as directed.
Take Zanaflex by mouth. You should not take more than 18 of the 2mg tablets or 9 of the 4mg tablets in any 24 hour period.
Try to take Zanaflex at the same times each day to avoid missing any doses.
Food can change the way your body absorbs and uses Zanaflex. Be sure to discuss this with your doctor to determine the best way to take your dose, especially when changes to your dose are being considered, or if you are being prescribed a different dose form of Zanaflex (eg, tablets or capsules).
Do not stop taking Zanaflex suddenly. Your doctor will probably reduce your dose gradually.
If you miss a dose of Zanaflex, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Keep Zanaflex at room temperature, away from light and moisture.
Before taking Zanaflex, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have liver or kidney problems;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
Active ingredient: tizanidine hydrochloride.

During my recent visit with my physician, I expressed my frustration with falling asleep and the ongoing battle of a restless night. I explained that my mind tends to race, and I struggle to fall asleep unless it's an immediate transition from being awake to sleep. I mentioned my exhaustion from waking up at 6am every weekday with little to no rest, without the luxury of napping throughout the day. I anticipated receiving a prescription for Ambien or Restoril, medications that had worked for me previously. However, my physician prescribed Zanaflex and asked if I preferred a mild approach or something more intense. We both laughed at his comment and decided to proceed with the details I had provided. My doctor instructed me to take 6mg of Zanaflex before bed, but instead of providing me with a prescription, he offered me a sample box containing three cards with three capsules each, each capsule containing 2mg of the medication. He advised me to keep returning for the samples as necessary and inquired about my insurance coverage for prescription medication. I decided to begin with the smallest dose of 2mg, as I had never taken a muscle relaxer before and was unsure of how my body would react. After a week of taking Zanaflex, I've noticed that it helps me sleep and wake up with minimal grogginess. I haven't experienced dry mouth, but I have felt a sense of dizziness and drunkenness if I remain awake after taking the medication. Although it's unusual for a muscle relaxer to be prescribed for insomnia, I trust my doctor's recommendation and am hopeful for a better night's rest.

I take this medication four times a day for my migraines. The first two doses consist of half a pill, with each pill containing 4 mg. Before bedtime, I take a full pill. This medication is part of my migraine prevention regimen, which also includes topomax and gabapentin. Since I began using this medication on September 5th, 2017, I have not had any migraines. Before, I used to suffer from them 2-3 times per week, so I am very pleased with the results thus far. The half dose of the medication can make me a little tired, but I can still manage my daily activities with it, assuming my chronic condition doesn't interfere. However, the full pill does tend to make me sleepy. Overall, I am very satisfied with this medication's effectiveness in preventing my migraines.
