Valtrex (generic name: valaciclovir/valacyclovir; brand names include: Valcivir / Zelitrex) is an antiviral medicine.
Indications include:
herpes zoster (shingles)
first-episode and recurrent genital herpes
herpes labialis (cold sores)
chickenpox
Valtrex disrupts the process by which the herpes virus reproduces itself and spreads to other cells in the body. This helps to keep the virus inactive.
Once-daily Valtrex, along with safer sex practices, has also been proven to reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes to a partner.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Valtrex exactly as directed.
