Skelaxin (generic name: Metaxalone) is a muscle relaxant with a low chance of drowsiness or side effects. It can provide relief of acute, painful muscle spasms in adults and children 12 years of age and above. These kinds of spasms can cause pain in your back or in other muscle groups.
Skelaxin works best when it is part of a complete treatment program, including rest, physical therapy, and other measures of relief as directed by your healthcare professional.
Skelaxin provides:
prompt relief; it begins working in your body within 1 hour of taking it;
improved range of motion and no interference with posture and balance;
minimal sedation with only a small chance of feeling groggy, woozy, or extremely sleepy;
no adverse cardiovascular effects;
no withdrawal symptoms or risk of dependence, since it is not habit forming.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Skelaxin exactly as directed.
Skelaxin comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It usually is taken three or four times a day.
Take Skelaxin with or without food. Taking it with food may increase the risk of drowsiness or dizziness.
If you miss a dose of Skelaxin and you are taking it regularly, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from heat and light.
Before taking Skelaxin, tell your doctor or pharmacist if:
you are allergic to Skelaxin or any other drugs;
you have or have ever had kidney disease, liver disease, seizures, or a blood disorder;
you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
