Retrovir (generic name: zidovudine / azidothymidine; brand names include: Zidovir / Retrovis) is an antiviral agent which is highly active against retroviruses including the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).
Retrovir is used, in combination with other antiretrovirals, for the long term treatment of HIV infected adults and children.
Retrovir slows down the progression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, which can lead to Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) and other related illnesses, such as AIDS-related Complex (ARC).
It works by blocking the reproduction of the HIV virus. In this way it stops ongoing damage to the body's immune system, which fights infection.
Retrovir is also given during pregnancy to prevent an HIV-infected woman from passing the virus to her baby.
Retrovir is non-addictive.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Retrovir exactly as directed.
Retrovir can be taken with or without food. Take Retrovir with a full glass of water.
It is important to use Retrovir regularly to get the most benefit. Get your prescription refilled before you run out of medicine completely.
Do not change your doses or medication schedule without advice from your doctor.
If you forget to take a dose of Retrovir, take it as soon as you remember, then go back to taking it as you would normally. If it is almost time for your next dose of Retrovir capsules or oral solution, skip the dose you missed and take your next dose when you are meant to. Do not take a double dose to make up for the one that you missed.
Keep Retrovir capsules at room temperature, away from direct light and moisture.
Before taking Retrovir, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to Retrovir or other medicines;
you have kidney or liver disease, a history of pancreatitis, or decreased activity of your bone marrow;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
