Prednisone (generic name: prednisone; brand names include: Deltasone / Omnacortil / Winpred / Cortancyl / Cutason / Decortin / Deltacortene / Sone / Meticorten) is in a class of drugs called corticosteroids.
Prednisone is used to treat many different conditions, including:
certain types of arthritis;
severe allergic reactions;
multiple sclerosis;
lupus;
certain conditions that affect the lungs, skin, eyes, kidneys blood, thyroid, stomach, and intestines.
Prednisone is also sometimes used to treat the symptoms of certain types of cancer.
Prednisone may also be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Prednisone exactly as directed.
Prednisone is usually taken with food one to four times a day or once every other day. Your personal dosing schedule will depend on your condition and on how you respond to treatment.
Take each dose with a full glass of water. You may take Prednisone with food or milk.
If you are taking one dose daily, take that dose before 9 a.m. if possible, to follow the body's natural cycle. If you take more than one dose daily, space the doses evenly throughout the day as directed by your doctor.
Do not stop taking Prednisone suddenly if you have been taking it for a few weeks. You may need a gradual reduction in dosage before you stop taking this medication.
Store Prednisone at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Before taking Prednisone, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have diabetes; high blood pressure; osteoporosis; seizures; tuberculosis; ulcers; or liver, kidney, intestinal, heart, or thyroid disease;
you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
