Lamivudine (generic name: lamivudine, zidovudine; brand names include: Duovir) is used, alone or with other medicines, to slow down the progression of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It slows production of the virus and in this way stops ongoing damage to the body's immune system, which fights infection.
Lamivudine contains both lamivudine and zidovudine which belong to a group of medicines called antiretrovirals. Both of these medicines are nucleoside analogues that work together to slow the growth of HIV by blocking an enzyme needed by the virus to reproduce.
Lamivudine is non-addictive.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Take Lamivudine exactly as directed.
The recommended dose is one Lamivudine tablet orally two times a day, with or without food.
Continue to use Lamivudine even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses. Taking Lamivudine at the same time each day will help you remember to take it.
If you miss a dose of Lamivudine by more than 4 hours, wait and then take the next dose at the regularly scheduled time. However, if you miss a dose by less than 4 hours, take your missed dose immediately. Then take your next dose at the regularly scheduled time. Do not take more or less than your prescribed dose of Lamivudine at any one time.
Lamivudine tablets may be stored at room temperature and do not require refrigeration.
Before taking Lamivudine, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to lamivudine, zidovudine, or any other medications;
you taking Epivir, Epivir HBV, Retrovir, or Trizivir, as they also contain lamivudine and zidovudine;
you have kidney problems;
you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding.
Active ingredients: lamivudine, zidovudine.
