Lamictal (generic name: lamotrigine; brand names include: Lametec) belongs to a group of medicines called "anti-epileptic drugs".
Lamictal is used for the treatment of epilepsy in adults and children aged 2 years and over. Lamictal is used in partial or generalised seizures including tonic-clonic seizures and seizures associated with Lennox-Gastaut Syndrome.
Lamictal is non-addictive.
This medication may be prescribed for other uses. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Lamictal exactly as directed.
Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Lamictal tablets may be swallowed whole, chewed or dispersed in a small volume of water (at least enough to cover the whole tablet).
Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Do not stop taking Lamictal without first talking to your doctor, even if you feel better. It is important to continue taking Lamictal to prevent symptoms from recurring. Stopping Lamictal suddenly may result in increased seizure frequency or a return of symptoms of bipolar disorder. If the medication needs to be stopped, your doctor may need to lower the dosage gradually.
If you miss a dose of Lamictal, take it as soon as you remember it. However, if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
Keep Lamictal tablets in a cool dry place. Protect from light.
Before taking Lamictal, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to lamotrigine or any other medicines;
you are taking any form of hormonal contraceptive (e.g. "the pill") or HRT;
you are suffering, or have ever suffered, from any liver or kidney disorders;
you have Parkinson's disease;
you are taking any other medication for epilepsy;
you ever had a rash during treatment with any other antiepileptic drugs;
you are taking rifampicin, which is used to treat infections, including tuberculosis;
