Flonase (generic name: fluticasone propionate; brand names include: Flomist / Flixonase / Nasofan) is a corticosteroid.
Flonase Spray is used for treatment of allergic and nonallergic nasal symptoms including congestion, sneezing, itching, and runny nose in adults and children 4 years of age and older.
Flonase works by preventing and decreasing inflammation (swelling that can cause other symptoms) in the nose.
Follow the directions on your prescription label carefully, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any part you do not understand. Use Flonase Nasal Spray exactly as directed.
Flonase is usually sprayed in each nostril once daily or twice daily in the morning and evening. It may be used only as needed to treat symptoms.
Shake gently before each use. Avoid spraying in the eyes.
To use a nose spray, gently blow your nose. Sit down and tilt your head back slightly. Place the tip of the spray container into the nose. Using a finger from your other hand, press against the opposite nostril to close it off. Breathe gently through the open nostril and squeeze the spray container. If you are using more than 1 spray, wait for 1 to 2 minutes between sprays. After using the medicine, rinse the tip of the spray unit in hot water and dry with a clean tissue to prevent contamination.
Symptoms can start to improve as soon as 12 hours after you start using Flonase Spray, and should improve within a couple of days. Use Flonase Spray on a regular schedule to get the most benefit from it. The full benefit may not be achieved until you have used Flonase Spray for several days.
Continue to use Flonase Spray even if you feel well. Do not miss any doses.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from excess heat and moisture.
Before using Flanase Nasal Spray, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have glaucoma; or tuberculosis;
you have recently had surgery on your nose or recently suffered from a nasal infection;
you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
