Detrol (generic name: tolterodine; brand names include: Roliten / Detrusitol / Terol LA) belongs to a group of medicines called antimuscarinics.
Detrol is used for treating overactive bladder with symptoms of urinary frequency, urgency, and leakage.
Detrol helps to control the release of urine by reducing spasm, and relaxing the smooth muscle of the bladder wall. It also increases the storage volume of the bladder, and can act on the brain to delay the desire to urinate.
Detrol:
Reduces the number of wetting accidents
Reduces frequent visits to the bathroom
Reduces strong, sudden urges to urinate
Detrol works by blocking a chemical that causes contractions of the bladder.
Detrol as available as 4 mg extended release capsules in blister packs.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Detrol exactly as directed.
The normal dose is 2mg twice daily, taken with or without food. Your doctor will prescribe the dose that is right for you.
Continue taking your medicine for as long as your doctor tells you. Your doctor should re-assess your condition at regular intervals, for example after 6 months, to determine for how long you need to keep taking Detrol.
If you forget to take it, take it as soon as you remember, and then go back to taking it as you would normally. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the dose you missed. Do not try to make up for missed doses by taking more than one dose at a time.
Keep the tablets at room temperature, away from heat and moisture.
Before taking Detrol, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have glaucoma; or you have kidney, liver, heart or gastrointestinal problems;
