Crestor (generic name: rosuvastatin calcium; brand names include: Rosuvas / Rozavel) is a member of the drug class called statins that are used to treat high cholesterol.
Crestor lowers the bad cholesterol (LDL), and raises the good cholesterol (HDL) when exercise and changes to diet are not enough on their own.
Crestor has also been proven to slow the progression of atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque in your arteries over time.
By limiting cholesterol production, Crestor lowers the amount of total cholesterol that ends up in the bloodstream. Crestor can lower LDL cholesterol up to 52%. It can also increase the amount of HDL cholesterol in the blood by up to 14%.
Crestor is not addictive.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Crestor exactly as directed.
Crestor can be taken at any time of the day. It does not matter whether you take Crestor with food or on an empty stomach.
The usual starting dose is one 10 mg tablet taken once daily. Depending on your condition, your doctor will decide the most appropriate starting dose for you. Swallow each tablet whole with a drink of water.
Do not increase or adjust your Crestor dose yourself. Take Crestor once a day, at about the same time each day.
It is important to continue taking Crestor even if you feel well. Most people with high cholesterol or triglycerides do not feel sick. Do not stop taking Crestor unless you have discussed it with your doctor.
If you forget to take a dose of Crestor, take it as soon as you remember as long it is more than 6 hours before your next dose is due. Otherwise, wait until your next dose is due and take it as normal. Do not double the dose to make up for the one you missed.
While taking Crestor you also need to follow a low-fat diet, control your weight and exercise regularly. Do not take antacids for at least 2 hours after taking this medicine.
Crestor should be kept at room temperature, away from heat, light and moisture.
Before taking Crestor, tell your doctor if:
you are allergic to any medicines;
you have liver or kidney disease, or low thyroid hormone levels;
are pregnant or intend to become pregnant, or you are breast-feeding.
