Atripla (generic name: efavirenz / emtricitabine / tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) is a combination medicine used alone or with other medicines to treat HIV-1 infection in adults.
Atripla combines two nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and one non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) in one pill.
With the power of three HIV medicines in one pill, you may only need to take one Atripla pill each day. For many patients, Atripla offers a complete HIV regimen in a single daily dose.
Atripla helps block HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, a viral chemical in your body (enzyme) that is needed for HIV-1 to multiply. Atripla lowers the amount of HIV-1 in the blood (viral load).
Atripla may also help to increase the number of T cells (CD4+ cells), allowing your immune system to improve. Lowering the amount of HIV-1 in the blood lowers the chance of death or infections that happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections).the amount of didanosine in your blood, which could result in more side effects.
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. Take Atripla exactly as directed.
Take Atripla once a day on an empty stomach and preferably at bedtime.
Tell your doctor before taking Atripla, if:
you have kidney problems or are undergoing kidney dialysis treatment, have bone problems, or liver problems, including hepatitis B virus infection;
you have ever had seizures or are taking medicine for seizures;
you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, or you are breast-feeding.
